Bloomsdale Long Standing Spinach produces deeply savoyed, dark-green leaves with a bright, tender flavor ideal for salads, sautés, and baking. This classic open-pollinated variety grows into a broad, productive plant that tolerates heat better than many other spinach types. Its dependable growth habit and rich texture make it a favorite for both spring and fall plantings.

Growing Information

Planting

  • Sow seeds directly outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked in early spring, or plant again in late summer for a fall crop.
  • Plant seeds ½ inch deep in rows spaced 12–18 inches apart to accommodate the plant’s spreading habit.
  • Allow 6 inches between plants after thinning so mature plants can reach their full width.
  • Choose fertile, well-drained soil to support fast maturation and the development of heavily savoyed leaves.
  • In regions with mild winters, fall plantings may overwinter and produce early spring harvests.
  • Keep soil cool and evenly moist during germination for the best stand establishment.

Maintenance

  • Keep soil consistently moist to support rapid, tender leaf growth and reduce stress during warm spells.
  • Provide partial shade in hotter climates to help this variety’s natural heat tolerance prevent early bolting.
  • Thin seedlings to encourage good airflow and strong, broad plant development.
  • Side-dress with nitrogen-rich fertilizer to maintain vigorous growth throughout the season.

Harvest & Storage

  • Harvest individual leaves when they reach a usable size, typically beginning around 35–50 days from sowing.
  • Pick outer leaves first to allow continued production and a longer harvest window.
  • Use harvested spinach quickly for the best flavor, as the tender savoyed leaves store for only a few days in the refrigerator.
  • Rinse gently and dry thoroughly before refrigeration to extend shelf life.
