Sugar Baby Watermelon delivers classic summertime sweetness in a compact, early-maturing heirloom perfect for gardens and large containers. Its round, nearly black rind protects crisp, medium-red flesh with rich flavor, while the compact vines make it a strong choice for small spaces. Each melon typically reaches 6–8 inches across and about 8–10 pounds, offering full-sized taste in a manageable size. This variety thrives in heat and matures reliably in about 75–80 days, making it ideal for warm-season growers seeking dependable harvests.

We ship to the Continental U.S. and Alaska only. We cannot ship to Hawaii, overseas U.S. military bases, or U.S. territories.

Growing Information

Planting

  • Sow seeds directly in warm soil once temperatures reach at least 70°F, or start indoors in biodegradable pots for an earlier harvest.
  • Plant in full sun with plenty of room for vines to roam, allowing several feet of horizontal spread per plant.
  • Choose well-drained, sandy or loamy soil enriched with compost to support strong root and vine development.
  • Place seeds 1 inch deep in small hills or mounds, spacing hills 3–4 feet apart for optimal growth.
  • Ensure even watering during germination to support quick, vigorous emergence and stable early growth.

Maintenance

  • Provide consistent moisture during flowering and fruit set, particularly in hot or dry conditions.
  • Mulch around the base of the vines to retain soil moisture and reduce weed pressure.
  • Train vines outward to give each plant ample space and maintain good airflow, as mature plants typically spread several feet.
  • Fertilize lightly with a balanced formula early on, then switch to a phosphorus-rich feed as blossoms appear.

Harvest & Storage

  • Harvest Sugar Baby watermelons when the ground spot turns creamy and the tendril nearest the fruit dries, signaling full sweetness.
  • The melons are ready to pick around 75–80 days from planting, depending on temperature and care.
  • Handle fruit gently to avoid bruising, as the compact 6–8" melons can crack if dropped.
  • Store whole watermelons in a cool, shaded location for up to a week, or refrigerate cut pieces for short-term freshness.
