Connecticut Field Pumpkin is a time-honored heirloom known for producing impressively large, bright-orange pumpkins with thick, smooth flesh. Its broad, flattened fruits reach up to 20 inches across, making them ideal for traditional jack-o-lanterns and also well-suited for pies, soups, and fall décor. Reliable and vigorous, this classic variety remains a favorite for autumn harvest traditions.

Growing Information
Planting
- Sow seeds outdoors after frost when soil temperatures reach at least 70°F for strong germination.
- Plant seeds 1 inch deep in rows or hills, allowing 4–6 feet between hills or wide spacing in rows for vine development.
- Expect maturity in approximately 100–120 days, depending on local growing conditions.
- Choose a full-sun location with fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter.
- For containers, select very large planters or grow bags and allow vines to sprawl beyond the container’s edges.
- Water deeply after planting and maintain even moisture as seedlings establish and vines begin vigorous growth.
Maintenance
- Plants reach a mature height of about 12–18 inches with sprawling vines that can spread 6–10 feet.
- Water consistently at the base of the plant, especially during fruit set, keeping foliage dry to reduce disease pressure.
- Mulching helps retain soil moisture and moderates soil temperature during warm summer months.
- Provide ample space for vines to run, training them away from walkways or neighboring crops if needed.
- Monitor for squash bugs and other common cucurbit pests, addressing issues early for best yields.
Harvest & Storage
- Harvest when the rind is hard, fully orange, and the pumpkin reaches its mature 12–20" diameter.
- Cut the fruit with several inches of stem attached to promote longer storage life.
- Cure pumpkins in a warm, dry place for about 10 days to toughen the rind and enhance storage quality.
- Store cured pumpkins in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location to maintain quality for several months.
- Handle carefully to avoid bruising the thick flesh and ensure optimum keeping performance.
