Danvers 126 is a classic American heirloom carrot celebrated for its dependable performance in tough, heavy soils. Bred in 19th-century Massachusetts and later refined for better uniformity, this variety produces stout, richly colored roots with exceptional sweetness. Its shorter 6–7 inch length makes it especially reliable for gardeners with clay or rocky beds while still delivering excellent flavor and yield.

We ship to the Continental U.S. and Alaska only. We cannot ship to Hawaii, overseas U.S. military bases, or U.S. territories.

Growing Information

Planting

  • Sow seeds directly into loosened soil as soon as it is workable in spring.
  • Plant in rows and cover seeds with a thin layer of fine soil to ensure good contact.
  • Choose a location with full sun whenever possible, though partial shade is tolerated.
  • Maintain steady moisture during germination, which may take up to two weeks.
  • Space seedlings once established so that roots have room to grow to their full size.

Maintenance

  • Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged to encourage even root development.
  • Thin seedlings early to maintain proper spacing and prevent overcrowding.
  • Mulch lightly to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature through the growing season.
  • Monitor for weeds, as carrots compete poorly and benefit from a clean bed.

Harvest & Storage

  • Carrots can be harvested once roots reach their mature 6–7 inch length, typically around 65–70 days from planting.
  • Gently loosen soil before pulling to avoid breaking the roots.
  • For best flavor, harvest when the tops of the roots show deep orange coloration.
  • Store unwashed roots in a cool, humid location, where they will keep for several weeks.
  • Trim greens to one inch before storage to extend freshness.
