Growing Information
Planting
- Sow seeds directly into the garden as soon as the soil can be worked in early spring.
- Plant in loose, fertile soil and cover lightly, as lettuce seeds need only minimal burial.
- Maintain even moisture during germination to ensure quick and uniform sprouting.
- For fall crops, sow again in late summer as temperatures begin to cool.
- Space mature plants 8" apart, with the blend reaching roughly 6–12" in height and 6–10" in spread.
- Use succession planting every two to three weeks if you want a steady rotation of fresh greens.
Maintenance
- Keep the soil consistently moist to support tender, fast-developing leaves.
- Provide afternoon shade during hot spells to reduce stress and delay bolting.
- Fertilize lightly with a balanced amendment to maintain steady leaf production.
- Thin plants to an 8" spacing to promote good airflow and prevent overcrowding.
- Monitor for heat-related stress, as looseleaf lettuces prefer cool conditions.
Harvest & Storage
- Harvest individual leaves when they reach usable size for a continuous supply.
- Leave the central crown intact to encourage repeated regrowth throughout the season.
- Expect the mix to mature fully in about 45–65 days, depending on the cultivar.
- Rinse leaves in cool water and store them in the refrigerator in a breathable container to maintain crispness.
- Use harvested greens within several days for the best flavor and texture.
