Growing Information

Planting

  • Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before your region’s last expected frost date.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in a sterile seed-starting mix and maintain soil temperatures between 70–80°F for optimal germination.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and nighttime temperatures remain consistently above 50°F.
  • Space plants 24–36 inches apart in rows spaced 36 inches apart in a location that receives full sun.
  • Amend garden soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter prior to planting to promote vigorous root development.
  • Harden off seedlings for 7–10 days before transplanting to reduce transplant shock.

Maintenance

  • Plants are indeterminate and will continue growing and producing until frost, requiring sturdy staking, caging, or trellising.
  • Mature plants typically reach 60–72 inches tall with a spread of 24–36 inches, depending on growing conditions and support.
  • Provide consistent watering to maintain even soil moisture and help prevent fruit cracking.
  • Apply a balanced fertilizer at transplant and again as flowering begins to support steady fruit development.
  • Prune lightly if desired to improve airflow and manage vine growth.

Harvest & Storage

  • Sun Gold tomatoes reach maturity in approximately 57 days from transplant and begin ripening early in the season.
  • Fruits are small, about 1 inch in diameter, and borne in large clusters on vigorous vines.
  • Harvest when the tomatoes turn a rich golden-orange and feel slightly soft to the touch.
  • Pick frequently to encourage continued production throughout the growing season.
  • Store freshly harvested tomatoes at room temperature and avoid refrigeration to preserve flavor and texture.
