Waltham Butternut Winter Squash produces dependable yields of smooth, tan fruits with rich, bright-orange flesh and a classic bell shape. This fast-maturing winter squash reaches harvest in about 85–90 days, offering sweet, velvety flavor perfect for roasting, mashing, or hearty soups. Fruits store exceptionally well when cured, making them a favorite for extending the harvest into the colder months.
We ship to the Continental U.S. and Alaska only. We cannot ship to Hawaii, overseas U.S. military bases, or U.S. territories.

Growing Information
Planting
- Sow seeds outdoors after the danger of frost has passed, placing them in warm, well-drained soil.
- Plant seeds 1 inch deep and space them in hills or rows that allow mature vines to reach their full spread of 60–72 inches.
- Ensure each planting location receives full sun, which encourages strong growth and improves flavor development.
- Thin seedlings to the strongest plants once they reach a few inches tall to give each vine room to grow.
- Keep soil consistently moist during early establishment, avoiding waterlogged conditions that can hinder germination.
- For shorter seasons, start seeds indoors and transplant carefully to avoid disturbing the roots.
Maintenance
- Provide ample space for vines to spread, as mature plants commonly extend several feet in all directions.
- Water consistently at the base of the plant to encourage even growth and reduce the risk of mildew.
- Mulching around the root zone helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds throughout the season.
- Monitor developing fruits and gently lift them off the soil to help prevent rot and pest damage.
- Fertilize lightly during early growth to support vigorous vines and strong fruit set.
Harvest & Storage
- Harvest Waltham Butternut squash about 85–90 days from sowing, once the rind hardens and develops a uniform tan color.
- Cut fruits with a few inches of stem attached to promote longer storage life.
- Cure the squash in a warm, dry place for 10–14 days to enhance sweetness and improve durability.
- Once cured, store fruits in a cool, well-ventilated area where they can last for several months.
- Use smaller, younger fruits as you would summer squash, or allow them to mature fully for long-keeping winter storage.
